What does SAL (Single Article Limit) mean?

You will come across the term single article limit or SAL in any given home insurance policy for home content and personal belongings cover. It indicates the specified value limit an insurance provider is willing to pay in case of damage or loss. Therefore, you must note down your list of insured items and their value in the filing process.

These limits vary from provider to provider, so if you want a higher limit, you might want to compare SAL before settling for the one you like. The current range is somewhere between AED 2000 to AED 40,000. It is the maximum amount a provider is willing to pay for a single expensive item in case of loss or damage.

Furthermore, if your item's value exceeds the SAL outlined in your insurance policy, the provider will only pay up to the outlined limit. So, if your valued item is valued at AED 30,000 and your SAL is AED 20,000, the home insurance provider will pay AED 20,000 in case of a claim. Not the entire AED 30,000 value is documented. The limit helps insurance providers mitigate risks when insuring high valued items. You can always opt for insurance providers who offer higher SAL.
