To cancel car insurance after selling your car in the UAE, complete the ownership transfer first, then send your insurer written notice with proof of the transfer.
Your refund is set by the CBUAE: 80% of the premium if the policy has run up to one month, falling to 30% and then nothing. A third-party (TPL) policy pays nothing after 8 months; a comprehensive policy pays nothing after 10 months.
The rules differ slightly between third-party and comprehensive cover, and an at-fault claim can cancel your refund completely. This guide gives you the official refund table, a worked AED example and the 6 steps in order.
If you’re replacing the car, you’ll need new cover before you can register it, so compare car insurance quotes in the UAE while you wait for your refund.
Cancelling UAE Car Insurance After A Sale: Facts
If you want to get a refund from a cancelled car insurance after you have sold the car, the following facts from the CBUAE unified TPL policy, unified comprehensive policy and Dubai RTA will help you understand the core legal rights as per the UAE government.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can I cancel after selling? | Yes. A transfer of ownership is one of the official reasons to end a policy early. |
| Maximum refund | 80% of the premium, if the policy has run for up to 1 month |
| No refund after | 8 months (third-party) or 10 months (comprehensive) |
| Notice (comprehensive) | Written notice at least 7 days before the end date |
| Refund lost if | A claim was paid or is pending for an accident you caused |
| Dubai RTA refund certificate | AED 120, issued instantly online |
Many motor insurance policyholders forget to claim back their insurance after selling their vehicles.
Once the policy has been active for more than 8 months, the time lapses entirely, and policyholders do not get any refund, regardless of when they sold the car.
Can You Cancel Car Insurance After Selling Your Car In the UAE?
Yes. Selling your car is an accepted reason to cancel UAE car insurance early, but the rules depend on whether you have third-party or comprehensive cover.
Both policy types are set by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) through the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policies, so every insurer follows the same basic rules.
Third-party (TPL) policies: only 3 reasons allow cancellation
A UAE third party car insurance policy cannot be cancelled just because you want to. While the vehicle licence is valid, neither you nor the insurer can end it early. The CBUAE policy allows early cancellation only for these reasons:
- The vehicle licence (registration) is cancelled.
- A new policy is issued because the vehicle’s details changed.
- Ownership of the vehicle is transferred, backed by a certificate from the authority.
Selling your car falls under reason 3, so you need proof that the transfer is complete before your insurer can cancel.
Comprehensive policies: give 7 days’ written notice
A UAE comprehensive car insurance policy can be cancelled by the policyholder with written notice at least 7 days before the date you want it to end.
You can send the notice by email, fax, hand delivery or registered letter. In practice, insurers will still ask for proof of the sale or transfer before they process your refund.
How Much Car Insurance Refund Will You Get?
Your UAE car insurance refund is a fixed percentage of the premium you paid, based on how long the policy has been in force.
It is not calculated day by day. The CBUAE “short rate” schedules set these percentages:
| How long the policy has run | Third-party (TPL) refund | Comprehensive refund |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1 month | 80% | 80% |
| Over 1 month, up to 4 months | 70% | 70% |
| Over 4 months, up to 6 months | 50% | 50% |
| Over 6 months, up to 8 months | 30% | 30% |
| Over 8 months, up to 10 months | Nil | 30% |
| Over 10 months | Nil | Nil |

Worked example:
Here is how the refund works on two example premiums. These figures are illustrations, not quotes.
| Situation | Premium paid | Refund % | Refund |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comprehensive, car sold after 3 months | AED 2,400 | 70% | AED 1,680 |
| Comprehensive, car sold after 9 months | AED 2,400 | 30% | AED 720 |
| Third-party, car sold after 3 months | AED 900 | 70% | AED 630 |
| Third-party, car sold after 9 months | AED 900 | Nil | AED 0 |
If you plan to sell your car, sell and cancel your insurance early.
One extra month can move you into a lower refund band. Ask your insurer how the 5% VAT on your premium is treated in the refund.
Already found a buyer and shopping for your next car?
Insurers price new cars differently. It is always wise to compare comprehensive car insurance quotes before you renew with the same company out of habit.
When You Get No Refund At All
You will not get a car insurance refund in these cases:
- An at-fault claim: your insurer has paid, or is still handling, a claim for an accident you caused during the policy.
- Unknown-party claims (comprehensive): the comprehensive policy also refers to accidents blamed on an unknown person, such as a hit-and-run. Check your policy wording.
- Too late in the policy: over 8 months for third-party cover, or over 10 months for comprehensive cover.
How to Cancel Your Car Insurance After Selling: 6 Steps
You can cancel your vehicle insurance in the UAE in just six steps, and the order matters: transfer the car first, then cancel.
- Complete the ownership transfer. The buyer must register the car in their name. In Dubai, follow our guide on how to transfer car ownership in Dubai. If the buyer is in another emirate, see transferring a car between emirates.
- Get proof of the transfer. In Dubai, apply for the RTA insurance refund certificate. In other emirates, keep the transfer paperwork from the traffic department.
- Send written notice to your insurer. Email is accepted. State your policy number, the vehicle plate and chassis number, the sale date, and that you are cancelling because ownership was transferred.
- Attach your documents. Include the transfer proof and the documents listed below.
- Ask for your claims-history certificate. This protects your no-claims discount on your next car (more on this below).
- Confirm the refund amount and date. Check it against the refund table above. If the insurer delays or refuses without a valid reason, complain to the insurer first, then contact the CBUAE on 800 CBUAE (22823).

Documents to Keep Ready For Insurance Cancellation
| Document | Where you get it |

| Emirates ID copy | Your own records |
| Signed cancellation request | Your insurer’s form or your own written notice |
| Bank details (IBAN) for the refund | Your bank |
How long does the refund take?
You can get an insurance refund within 10-14 working days after cancelling it. If there are any delays it is better to ask your insurer may be some missing documents is keeping the delay.
What Is The RTA Insurance Refund Certificate?
The RTA insurance refund certificate is an RTA document confirming that a vehicle’s ownership has moved to another person, so your insurer can cancel the policy and refund you.
It is separate from the refund itself: the RTA issues the certificate, and your insurer pays the money.
- Fee: AED 120 (AED 100 certificate + AED 20 knowledge and innovation fee).
- Before you apply: pay any outstanding traffic fines on the vehicle.
- Where: the RTA website, the RTA Dubai app or RTA self-service machines.
- Processing time: issued instantly; it arrives by SMS and email.
See the RTA vehicle licensing certificate service for the latest details.
Cars registered in other emirates follow that emirate’s traffic department process.
Can The Buyer Take Over Your Car Insurance?
No, it is not possible for a buyer to take over your car insurance. The reason is that each driver has a separate risk profile(the way he drives and his driving track record) so one driver’s insurance can never be the same for another driver.
The new car owner normally buys their own policy to register the car in their name, and you cancel yours for a refund.
Can You Transfer Your Car Insurance To Your New Car?
It depends on your insurer.
They can sometime settle the remaining premium to a new policy for your newly owned car.
A few of the insurance companies may ask you to cancel the old insurance policy, get a policy refund and buy a brand new insurance policy for your new car.
Either way, it is the best moment to compare prices rather than accept the first renewal offer. You can renew your car insurance online and see quotes from several UAE insurers side by side.
Keep Your No-claims Discount When You Cancel
When you cancel, ask your insurer for a claims-history (no-claims) certificate. Under CBUAE rules, insurers must give former customers this certificate free of charge, on paper or electronically.
It matters because the motor tariff allows a no-claims discount of 10% for 1 claim-free year, 15% for 2 years and 20% for 3 years. Without the certificate, your next insurer may not be able to apply it. Read more in our guide to no-claims bonus facts.
What If Your Car Was Written Off (total loss)?
If your car is declared a total loss, your UAE car insurance policy ends automatically once the vehicle’s registration is cancelled based on a traffic department report that it is unroadworthy.
You don’t cancel it yourself; the insurer settles the claim under your policy terms instead. Our guide to total loss insurance explains how that payout works.
